The top 3 places to go shopping spree – Malls to shop

From malls with exciting basement dance clubs and live puzzle rooms to marina frontage shopping centres and onsite museums, our list of the Top 3 Shopping Malls in Penang certainly has something for everyone. Though the street market scene in Penang receives a lot of media coverage, we are fans of these air-conditioned retail-havens because more often than not, there are many deals to be had for the serious bargain hunter.

Proving that Penang’s retail landscape is almost as comprehensive as Kuala Lumpur, most of these malls house designer brands that offer serious discounts, especially if you visit during sale season. So read on to find out more about the great shopping opportunities during your Penang vacation.

Top 1. Gurney Plaza

Gurney Plaza is a waterfront shopping mall in Penang. Opened in 2001, it has three anchor tenants: Parkson Grand, the 12-screen Golden Screen Cinemas and Cold Storage supermarket. Additionally, the nine-storey mall houses over 380 stores with brands such as Coach, Fossil, Versace, and more.

Approximately three km northwest of Georgetown, located along the popular Gurney Drive, Gurney Plaza is the second-largest mall on the island and is 858,000sqft in size. Catering to the posh residential precincts and nearby hotels such as Evergreen Laurel and G Hotel, it is accessible via Gurney Drive and Kelawai Road.

New Wing

Aside from the various fashion designer labels that can be found here, ranging from Birkenstock, CK Jeans, Dorothy Perkins, Valentino and more, Gurney Plaza also has over 57 food and beverage outlets offering an array of local and international food choices.

Recently, the mall underwent extensive renovations that saw the addition of a seven-storey, 150,000sqft wing, facing Kelawei Road. Opened in November 2008, this new extension accommodates another department store, 83 shops and 800 new parking bays.

Spanning 73 acres, the 2.5 million-sqft complex sports the tagline ‘It’s all happening here!’ and indeed it is one of the island’s most popular shopping centres. There is an integrated entertainment zone on the third floor with a multi screen movie theatre (Golden Screen Cinemas), karaoke centre (Neway Karaoke Box) and more.

Shopping In Comfort

Some locals will tell you that acquiring bargains in Penang involves wandering the narrow streets and alleyways off Jalan Penang, Jalan Burmah and Lebuh Campbell. However, true Penangites will also tell you that the air-conditioned interior of Queensbay Mall makes for a far better shopping afternoon on the island. Besides the fact that you will be shopping in comfort, the mall has almost the same selections of merchandise as anywhere else on the island. Bargains can be found without difficulty, especially during sale periods and Queensbay is one of the few places on the island where you can find designer brands. Also accessible via a short drive down the east coast from Georgetown, a cheaper way to get to Queensbay Mall from anywhere on the island is to take the Rapid Penang bus #307.
